you know those times when someone says something you really wish you could remember later?  And then someone makes it into a gif image with a sparkly background and shares it on facebook?  Well, this doesn't have the sparkly background.  I can't promise no facebook though.

The burden of porn

The more legal and material hindrances women have broken through, the more strictly and heavily and cruelly images of female beauty have come to weigh upon us… [D]uring the past decade, women breached the power structure; meanwhile, eating disorders rose exponentially and cosmetic surgery became the fastest-growing specialty… [P]ornography became the main media category, ahead of legitimate films and records combined, and thirty-three thousand American women told researchers that they would rather lose ten to fifteen pounds than achieve any other goal…More women have more money and power and scope and legal recognition than we have ever had before; but in terms of how we feel about ourselves physically, we may actually be worse off than our unliberated grandmothers.

~Naomi Wolf (1991)

Walk close to the merry-go-round

"The real essence of life is strolling too close to the merry-go-round and getting clobbered by a yo-yo" - Robert B. Laughlin

Grellet - I shall not pass this way

"I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good thing,
therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any fellow human
being let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not
pass this way again."

Stephen Grellet, 1773-1855
French-born Quaker Minister

Tozer - God is wonderful

A.W. Tozer said, “God is so vastly wonderful, so utterly and completely delightful, that he can, without anything other than himself, meet and overflow the demands of our nature. He desires that we push into his presence and live our whole lives there.”

The Way We Think

The trick is to remember that the way we describe things reveals the way we think.

-Bill Watterson

C.S.Lewis - Pride

"MERE CHRISTIANITY" pg 107 (C.S Lewis)

According to Christian teachers, the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride. Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that, are mere fleabites in comparison : it was through Pride that the devil became the devil : Pride leads to every other vice : it is the complete anti-God state of mind. Does this seem to you exaggerated? If so, think it over. I pointed out a moment ago that the more pride one had, the more one disliked pride in others. In fact, if you want to find out how proud you are the easiest way is to ask yourself , "How much do I dislike it when other people snub me, or refuse to take any notice of me, or shove their oar in, or patronise me, or show off?" The point is that each person's pride is in competition with every one else's pride. It is because I wanted to be the big noise at the party that I am so annoyed at someone else being the big noise. Two trades never agree. Now what you want to get clear is that Pride is essentially competitive - is competitive by its very nature - while the other vices are competitive only , so to speak , by accident. Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man. We say that people are proud of being rich, or clever, or good-looking, but they are not. They are proud of being richer, or cleverer, or better-looking than others. If every one else became equally rich, or clever, or good-looking there would be nothing to be proud about. It is the comparison that makes you proud : the pleasure of being above the rest. Once the element of competition had gone, pride has gone. That is why I say that Pride is essentially competitive in a way the other vices are not.
