Stuff I've tried and liked.  Sometimes stuff I've tried and disliked but someone-whose-opinion-I-respect liked.

Eggnog

I think this is a similar recipe to the eggnog I usually make.  Every year I forget and then every year I figure it out again.  New resolution:  write down the recipe this year!!!!

  • 3 eggs
  • 1/4 cup local raw honey
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated nutmeg (plus a little more for garnish)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1/8 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup dark rum

Bocce ball

I like Amaretto.  I like Amaretto with orange juice.  They tell me this is, officially, a drink called a Bocce Ball.

But there appears to be some debate over the composition.  Sometimes it's simply
  • Amaretto,
  • Orange Juice &
  • garnish with a cherry
(since I hate marachino cherries in general, I skip that.  I can only handle them when absolutely necessary).  Maybe that's the cheap and lazy way to make it?  It can be too sweet if it isn't served over ice, but its definitely enjoyable.

Next step up appears to be
  • 1 1/2 oz vodka
  • 1/2 oz amaretto
  • 4 oz orange juice
  • 1 oz seltzer
  • orange slice for garnish

Fill a rocks glass with ice.  Add the vodka and amaretto.  Cover with the orange juice and finally top with the seltzer.

Also tasty.  Not so sweet, and with a bit more alcoholic kick.

And then you can get really spiffy... "Make it according to the recipe, only use very very thinly shaved lime, a large goblet, double the quantities and substitute Gran Marnier for Amaretto and substitute Cristal for soda water..and fresh squeezed orange juice..do not use anything but the best fully ripened oranges. Float 5..no more no less..transparent wafers of lime...on top and serve in pre-frozen goblet." http://cocktails.about.com/od/vodkadrinkrecipes/r/bocce_ball.htm  I'll have to try this version next summer :)
